College students selling wine

NAPA - The Napa Valley College winery program can now sell the fruits of its labors.

Federal and state permits will allow the college to sell wines produced by the nearly 1,000 students in the Viticulture and Winery Technology program.

Napa Valley College President Dr. Chris McCarthy said that Napa Valley College now has the first and only bonded winery in the California Community College system. The 2008 Chardonnay will be the first wine available for purchase in between 15 and 18 months, said college spokeswoman Betty Malmgren.

Profits from the sale of the school wines will help support winery programs. With the bonding of the school's "teaching winery" completed, the department is now creating a wine marketing plan, while college art students are designing a label, Malmgren said.

The college plans to sell five wines, including sauvignon blanc and chardonnay, pinot noir, Syrah and a cabernet sauvignon blend, and specialty wines.

The college's first vineyard harvest was in 1987. Over the years, most of the fruit from the school vineyards has been sold to local wineries and the wines produced from NVC grapes have always been highly regarded, according to the school.

Wine-making students have made wine every year, too, but these wines have not been sold.
